1.1 The Thinking Trap - why smart people believe wrong things
Key Idea:
Your brain is designed for speed, not accuracy.
That’s why we often believe things that aren’t actually true.
3 Common Thinking Traps:
1. Confirmation Bias
We look for information that supports what we already believe.
Example: You like a celebrity, so you notice only their good moments and ignore the bad ones.
2. Availability Bias
We judge what’s likely based on what comes to mind easily.
Example: After seeing news about accidents, you feel like they happen all the time.
3. Authority Bias
We trust people who sound confident or expert - even if they’re wrong.
Example: Believing something just because an AI or influencer said it.
Simple Tool: STOP
S — Stop → Pause before reacting
T — Think → What am I actually being asked to believe?
O — Origin → Where did this come from? Who said it?
P — Proof → What evidence supports this?
Use this tool before you believe, share, or act.
Think of something you believed recently without questioning it.
- Which bias might have influenced you?
- Was it confirmation bias, availability bias, or authority bias?
- If you used the STOP tool, would your decision be different?
This is just the beginning.
In the next lessons, you’ll learn how to:
- Spot weak arguments instantly
- Evaluate real evidence
- Think clearly in an AI-driven world
